The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized four flavored vapes by Glas Inc., featuring advanced age-verification technology. This regulatory shift occurs amid reports of pressure from President Trump to expedite approvals, aiming to offer adult smokers alternatives while curbing the illicit youth market.
To prevent underage use, the newly approved Glas Inc. products employ strict access restrictions. Consumers must verify their age using a government-issued ID and connect the device to a smartphone via Bluetooth before it can be activated.
Bret Koplow, acting director of the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products, called these device access restrictions a "potential game changer." He emphasized that technological innovation can protect young people from nicotine addiction while expanding flavored options for adults trying to transition away from traditional combustible cigarettes.
The timing of the approval has drawn significant attention. It closely follows a Wall Street Journal report indicating that President Trump had recently reprimanded FDA Commissioner Marty Makary for the agency's slow pace in approving flavored vape and nicotine products.
Previously, the FDA had broadly banned fruit and candy-flavored vapes due to their high appeal to minors—a ban recently upheld by the Supreme Court. However, the illicit market has continued to thrive.
Despite federal crackdowns, unauthorized disposable e-cigarettes have continued to flood the market, driving a significant surge in overall nicotine sales according to recent research published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. The FDA hopes this new tech-gated approach will provide a regulated, adult-only pathway for flavored products.
