Several popular holiday destinations, including Mexico, Singapore, and the Maldives, are implementing or strictly enforcing severe vaping bans in 2026, threatening arriving tourists with product confiscation and hefty fines.

    • Mexico's Total Ban: Rigorous customs checks at popular spots like Cancún enforce a nationwide ban on importing vapes, with on-the-spot fines.
    • Southeast Asia Crackdown: Singapore maintains strict $2,000 SGD fines, while Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Laos tighten public use and importation laws.
    • Maldives Confiscations: Customs officials at Malé International Airport are newly authorized to confiscate vapes and issue fines to arriving tourists.

Legal experts are warning UK holidaymakers to leave their e-cigarettes at home as popular tourist destinations worldwide drastically tighten vaping regulations in 2026. This global crackdown on the importation and use of vapes threatens travelers with severe financial penalties, product confiscation, and disrupted travel plans at international borders.

Matthew Ma, Head of Legal & External Affairs at Ecigator, emphasized that ignorance of a destination country’s laws will not excuse tourists from facing legal trouble. He detailed the specific countries implementing rigorous changes and heightened border controls this year.

    Destination2026 Regulation StatusEnforcement & Penalties
MexicoNationwide ban on importation, sale, and distribution.Strict customs checks at airports and cruise ports (e.g., Cancún, Cabo San Lucas). On-the-spot fines up to £360.
SingaporePossession and use are strictly illegal.Notoriously strict customs enforcement. Severe penalties including fines up to $2,000 SGD (approx. £1,150).
MaldivesImportation heavily restricted.Strict enforcement at Malé International Airport. Confiscation on arrival and potential fines, even for personal use.
VietnamTighter controls on sale, importation, and public use.Stricter airport checks and potential penalties for carrying vapes. (Cambodia and Laos maintain total bans).
MalaysiaStrengthened restrictions on possession and public use.Fines issued for breaking rules, with strict enforcement expected in major tourist hubs like Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

In Mexico, a rigorous nationwide ban implemented on January 16 makes it strictly illegal to bring any vaping products into the country. Travelers arriving in popular resorts like Cozumel or Cancún are facing immediate enforcement at customs checkpoints.

Southeast Asia remains a particularly high-risk region for vaping tourists. Singapore continues to enforce some of the toughest vaping laws globally, strongly warning British travelers against bringing vapes into the country under any circumstances. Meanwhile, Vietnam and Malaysia are moving away from legal grey areas, increasing enforcement around public use and issuing fines in major tourist hubs.

For those planning luxury breaks or honeymoons, the Maldives has also tightened its rules this year. Travelers are advised to check the latest guidance before flying, as customs officials are actively confiscating products upon arrival to prevent any disruption to their trips.
