A new Ohio State University study reveals that increasing e-cigarette prices effectively reduces vaping rates among adults without unintentionally driving them back to traditional combustible cigarettes.

    • Significant Reductions: High vape prices correlate with up to a 51% drop in product purchases.
    • No Smoking Surge: Higher costs for e-cigarettes did not lead to an increase in traditional cigarette use among adults.
    • Consumer Adaptation: Vapers often adapt to price hikes by switching to cheaper brands rather than quitting entirely.

Researchers at The Ohio State University (OSU) have confirmed that higher e-cigarette prices successfully curb vaping without pushing adult users toward traditional cigarettes. This finding addresses a major concern among policymakers regarding the potential unintended public health consequences of vape taxation.

According to the study from the Center for Tobacco Research at the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center, higher pre-tax prices directly reduced e-cigarette use, which was measured by the volume of product units purchased.

    Price LevelReduction in Units Purchased
    Mid-range prices30% - 33%
    Highest prices49% - 51%

“Our findings suggest that increasing e-cigarette prices can effectively reduce vaping without the unintended consequence of more smoking among adult vapers,” stated Shaoying Ma, the study's first author and research scientist.

However, the analysis noted a distinct shift in consumer behavior: users frequently switch to cheaper brands to offset the financial impact. Because adult vapers navigate a highly complex market featuring a mix of disposables, pod systems, and tanks, researchers warn that a standard, flat tax may not be sufficient.

Ma suggested that policymakers should consider implementing tiered tax designs tailored to different product categories to better achieve specific public health goals and effectively curb overall nicotine consumption.
