LGBTI+ Brazilians Smoke at Far Higher Rates, Inca Study Shows

Brazil’s National Cancer Institute (Inca) has confirmed that homosexual and bisexual populations smoke tobacco at rates 76% higher than heterosexuals. This disparity, driven by social stressors like discrimination, has prompted calls for targeted public health campaigns.

The study analyzed data from the 2019 National Health Survey (PNS), a primary official source on Brazilian health conditions. The findings show a clear gap in consumption habits between demographic groups.

Demographic GroupTobacco Smoking RateE-Cigarette (Vape) Usage
Homosexual & Bisexual22.4%Nearly 6x higher than heterosexual rate
    Heterosexual12.7%Baseline rate

Inca researchers emphasize that these numbers highlight the need for smoking prevention strategies tailored to the LGBTI+ community. Smoking is directly linked to increased risks of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and respiratory complications.

Experts point to social factors—such as prejudice, discrimination, and violence—as key drivers of this vulnerability. The emotional distress, anxiety, and chronic stress associated with LGBTphobia are known to increase the likelihood of substance use.

To address historical gaps in health data, Brazil’s Ministry of Health made it mandatory in 2024 to collect sexual orientation and gender identity information in primary care registries within the Unified Health System (SUS), subject to patient consent.
