A report published by Brazil's Ministry of Health confirms that smoking among young people climbed from 9.2% in 2023 to 11.5% in 2024. This increase breaks years of steady downward progress in national tobacco eradication, with health experts pointing directly to the spread of electronic cigarettes as the primary catalyst.
Rising E-Cigarette Use Reverses National Progress
According to Professor Ricardo Luiz de Melo Martins from the University of Brasília (UnB) Faculty of Medicine, the upturn directly correlates with the rising adoption of vapor products among youth.
“Until 2024, Brazil had an exemplary cigarette eradication policy. There was a declining trend that has now started to increase,” Martins stated. “This is because of the electronic cigarette, mainly consumed by young people. The higher concentration of substances has led young people to worse disease outcomes.”
Martins noted that the human lung is not equipped to metabolize inhaled foreign compounds: “When a person smokes, around 5,200 substances are inhaled, causing chronic inflammation in the lungs.”
The Human and Economic Cost to the Healthcare System
Data from the Institute for Clinical Effectiveness and Health Policy shows tobacco-related damage costs Brazil's Unified Health System (SUS) R$ 153.5 million annually. Over 145,000 Brazilians die each year from tobacco-linked conditions, broken down into:
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): Over 40,000 deaths
- Heart Disease: 30,000 deaths
- Lung Cancer: 26,000 deaths
- Secondhand Smoke Exposure: 20,000 deaths
Clinical Interventions and Smoking Cessation in Public Health
A study by the National Cancer Institute (INCA) revealed that a short, five-minute conversation with a healthcare provider can deter smoking initiation or prompt cessation. Over 10 million patients visit clinics annually without receiving tobacco counseling. Addressing this gap could reduce the national smoking population by 500,000 people and save the SUS R$ 1 billion.
Brazil currently offers cessation support through the SUS, combining cognitive behavioral psychotherapy sessions with nicotine replacement therapies and prescription medications where needed.
