Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has signed Senate Bill 9 into law, officially classifying vaping as smoking under the state's Clean Indoor Air Act to combat youth addiction and secondhand aerosol exposure.

    • Public Ban: Vaping is now prohibited in most public spaces where traditional smoking is already banned.
    • Effective Date: The expanded regulations will officially take effect on October 1st.
    • Penalties: Violators of the newly named Vivian Davis Figures Clean Indoor Air Act will face a $25 fine.

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has signed Senate Bill 9, officially adding vaping to the legal definition of smoking under state law. This legislative update to the 2003 Clean Indoor Air Act aims to protect public health from secondhand aerosols and curb rising youth nicotine addiction.

Health advocates emphasize the growing threat of electronic cigarettes to young people. Dr. Alan Brum, director of the Center for the Study of Tobacco and Society, warned that industries are aggressively targeting high school and college students with highly addictive nicotine products.

The expansion also addresses the physical dangers of secondhand exposure. According to the American Heart Association, inhaling e-cigarette aerosols increases the risk of bronchitis symptoms and shortness of breath, particularly among young adults who do not smoke or vape.

Renamed the Vivian Davis Figures Clean Indoor Air Act, the updated law takes effect on October 1st. Individuals caught vaping in restricted public spaces will be subject to a $25 fine, prioritizing the health of bystanders in shared environments.
